Senator Lugar Honored at Challenger Learning Center April 27

A private reception was held on April 27 to honor Senator Richard Lugar for his contributions to the Indianapolis Challenger Learning Center and to Decatur Township. Stephanie Monclova, a 6th grade Stephen Decatur student presented the senator with an original art piece created by her. Lead Flight Director Cyndy Meier is pictured with Senator Lugar and Ms. Monclova for the presentation.
West Side Chamber Plans Three Networking Events: May 31, June 13 and 28
West Side Chamber of Commerce is alerting you to three upcoming events at which you can meet other west side business people. The first, a continental breakfast event, will be held Friday, May 31 at 8:30 a.m. at Bosma Enterprises, 8020 Zionsville Road. The second is an open house at 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 13 at Pike Medical/Expedite Clinic, 6040 West 84th Street, with hors d'oeuvres provided by Chef Mike's Charcoal Grill. The third event will be held at Decatur Elementary Learning Center, 5850 Mann Road, with program provided by Training, Inc.

Glenda Ritz
Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction Glenda Ritz visited several schools and programs in the MSD of Wayne Township in late April. She toured the Area 31 Career Center, Ben Davis High School, the Wayne Township Preschool, and Ben Davis University High School. She is pictured talking with John Hull, student in the Machine Tool Technology program, at the Area 31 Career Center at Ben Davis High School.
MSD of Wayne Township Honors Teacher of the Year

Pamela Bacon
Pamela Bacon, English and language arts teacher at Ben Davis High School, has been named Teacher of the Year 2013 in the MSD of Wayne Township. The award was announced at a ceremony at Bridgeport Elementary on May 1.
Each school in MSD Wayne selects its own Teacher of the Year. A committee from Butler University's School of Education selects the district's overall winner, who then will compete at the state level.

West Side Chamber of Commerce President Rick Proctor served as keynote speaker at the Decatur Project-Based Learning Business/Community Partner breakfast held on May 10. Proctor discussed the importance of partnering with our local schools.
Big Brothers/Big Sisters Looking for West Side Business Mentors
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Indiana is partnering with companies on the west side to offer volunteer opportunities to their employees and executives. Approximately 100 west side youngsters have applied for a mentor. To learn more about how your employees can make a difference in the life of a child, contact Laura Halt or 317-472-3730.
Indy Parks Now Hiring for Seasonal Jobs
Indy Parks is hiring for hundreds of seasonal jobs, offering summer employment option for high school and college students, teachers looking for extra income during summer break, or older adults looking to become more involved in their community. Apply online or call 317-327-1470.
Learn How to Become Part of the Community Emergency Response Team
The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program helps to train local citizens to be better prepared to respond to emergency situations in their communities. When emergencies happen, CEERT members can:
  • Give critical support to first responders
  • Provide immediate assistance to victims
  • Organize spontaneous volunteers at a disaster site
CERT training sessions are scheduled for:
September 7, 14, 21, 28 (Saturdays) from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., location to be determined
October 5, 12, 19, 26 (Saturdays) from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at 3930 Georgetown Road

Eagle Creek Park Holds Kids' Fishing Derby June 1
Register your kids or grandkids by May 30 (FREE!) for the Eagle Creek Park Kids' Fishing Derby on Saturday, June 1 from 8 a.m. to 12 noon. Registration is required so the park personnel are prepared with enough supplies for all participants. Pre-register online or call 317-327-7110 for more information. Rain date is Sunday, June 2.
Pike Library Schedules Family Game Night May 21 and Starts Summer Reading Program
Pike Library, 6525 Zionsville Road, will hold a family game night at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 21 - all ages welcome.
The library will start its summer reading program June 3 with registration from now til then. Kick-off of the summer reading program will be held June 1 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon.
Wayne Branch Library Offers Computer Instruction and Job Search Workshops
Wayne Branch Library, 198 South Girls School Road, will hold basic computer instruction at 9 a.m. on Tuesdays, May 21 and May 28. The branch library will hold job search workshops on Wednesdays, May 22 and 29. For more information, call 317-275-4530.

Eagle Branch Library, 3325 Lowry Road, will hold its Job Center @ the Library sessions on May 21 and 22 from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. For more information, call 317-275-4340.
Public Safety Day Will Feature Activities for Kids on May 18 in Clermont Wayne Twp Logos
Trustee Andy Harris and Local 416, Wayne Township Fire Department, will give away two bicycles with training wheels for one girl and one boy (must be present to win) at the annual Public Safety Day on Saturday, May 18 at the Lions Club Park, 3201 Tansel Road in Clermont. The special day will include kids' activities, free smoke alarms, and health and safety information. For more information, or call 317-241-4191.
Walkers Wanted for Beacon of Hope Team in June 1 Race Away from Domestic Violence
Beacon of Hope Center for Women, Inc., is seeking walkers to register as a team participant in the Race Away from Domestic Violence on Saturday, June 1 at 8 a.m. at 501 West Maryland Street. Beacon of Hope Will Host B2B Breakfast June 21 at The Country Club of Indianapolis
Beacon of Hope Center for Women, Inc., will be hosting a "Lead the Way" B2B Breakfast on Friday, June 21 from 7 to 9 a.m. on Friday, June 21 at The Country Club of Indianapolis, 2801 Country Club Road. Taste of Hendricks County Will Feature 20-Plus Restaurants July 11
Taste of Hendricks County will feature edible delights of more than 20 restaurants on Thursday, July 11 at Five Star Catering at Primo West in Plainfield. Advance tickets for $25 are available now at the Hendricks County Flyer and other locations. Tickets for $30 will be available at the door.
